Cappadocia - Kayseri

Day 4

Day 4 unfolds at a leisurely pace, beginning with breakfast and checkout from our hotel, followed by an intriguing city tour of Cappadocia. Cappadocia is renowned for its 'fairy chimneys,' captivating rock formations that seem to touch the sky. Erosion sculpted the landscape, leaving the more resilient structures to tower up to 130 feet high, creating a breathtakingly surreal panorama. These subterranean havens, meticulously carved by hand, served as refuges for ancient inhabitants seeking to evade persecution. Next, we venture to the Ihlara Valley, celebrated not only for its natural beauty and captivating canyon but also for its churches adorned with distinctive frescoes that depict a blend of religious and cultural heritage. Our exploration culminates with a visit to Avanos, a town renowned for its pottery-making tradition. Here, the unique techniques and styles passed down through generations continue to thrive, offering a glimpse into the area's rich artisanal history. The site is home to an array of ruins, including a remarkably preserved theatre and a necropolis with sarcophagi that extend for over 2 kilometres. Noteworthy among its ruins is the Antique Pool, where submerged Roman columns, the aftermath of an earthquake, can be found. It is situated adjacent to the contemporary town of Pella, close to the Macedonian Gulf in northern Greece. This city holds significant historical importance as the birthplace of Philip II in 382 BC and his son, Alexander the Great, in 356 BC.
